"Untapped Potential" is the best way to describe what my life was like before coming to CFR. I was living without direction, without purpose and without the ability to really enjoy simple pleasures in life. Now, over 12 years later, I have purpose. I have direction and I can really appreciate all that life has to offer. With the help and guidance from CFR, I have been able to change that "untapped potential" into a Master’s degree in business and live a very enriched life. Most importantly though, my children only know their father as someone who is always there and is devoted to their own happiness and well-being. It really can work!

Adolescent Program Services

Adolescent Treatment
Community and Family Resources offers Adolescent treatment for teenagers from the ages of 12 – 17. In order to assess whether a teenager has an issue with substances that requires treatment, an evaluation will be completed. This evaluation can be completed at any of our outpatient sites by our Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors.  The level of care is then determined through rigorous application of clinical criteria for placement and continued stay based upon the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. Community and Family Resources offers Extended Outpatient for Adolescents at each of our centers except for Boone and Ames. Teens requiring a higher level of care will be referred to another agency.

Philosophy of Adolescent Treatment
It is the basic philosophic approach of Adolescent treatment that chemical dependency is a disease. The disease is primary, progressive, chronic, and fatal if left untreated. We believe that, even though the disease is not curable, it is treatable. When we refer to chemicals, we mean both drugs and alcohol, as alcohol is a drug.

When a family member is dependent on chemicals, the other family members suffer in similar ways to the dependent person. Their loved one’s behavior becomes the center of their lives and, in adapting, they become dysfunctional as well.

In our treatment program, we ask our clients to completely abstain from all mood-altering chemicals. We believe it is only during periods of abstinence that we are able to identify what triggers using behavior and learn what each person will need to do to begin a solid recovery program. Teaching responsible using is not workable; there is no such thing as a chemically dependent person using responsibly.

Another important part of treatment is for the family of the addict to understand how they have been affected by the dependent persons’ behaviors and for them to recognize and learn the best ways to be of support to their loved one. Participation in Al-Anon can be a valuable resource for family members.

Our treatment program is a blend between the philosophy of family systems, motivational interviewing and a traditional cognitive/behavior therapy approach. The clinical staff at CFR consists of men and women who have had to overcome issues with substance abuse and/or gambling, either directly or indirectly and who are specifically trained and certified to be substance abuse counselors.

Goals of Adolescent Treatment
The primary goal of treatment is to help our clients recognize how chemical use has impacted their lives and to help them develop a recovering lifestyle. Chemical dependency is similar to having an allergy to drugs and alcohol. When dependent people use, they react to the chemical in a way that interferes with their ability to function normally.

As important as it is to accept the dependency as a disease (not a choice), it is as important to hold the dependent person accountable for the management of their disease. Recovering chemically dependent people are sick people getting better, not bad people being good.

Treatment Fees
The cost for an evaluation and treatment will be explained at the time of your initial phone call to the agency. Community and Family Resources has contracts with most major insurance agencies and we do accept Title 19. We also are able to offer a sliding fee scale to those who quality. CFR does not deny services based on ability to pay.
